It’s California in a rout

High school connections for the 2014 Super Bowl show 22 players who hail from the Golden State – twice as many this year as from any other state – plus both head coaches. Two California schools also have two alums in this year’s Super Bowl. Another school from Virginia also has a pair.

National networks plus Sports Illustrated were excited this season to report that there were more starting quarterbacks in the NFL from Texas high schools than from any other state. This is partly due to the ascent of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III (both Texans) but it’s also due to the rise of pass-happy offenses in Texas in high school and college.

It will be interesting to see if the national networks and Sports Illustrated notice that in this year’s Super Bowl there are almost twice as many players from California high schools than from any other state, including Texas, not to mention that both head coaches in the game are from California as well.

Since Super Bowl alumni lists began to be compiled by Cal-Hi Sports and Student Sports in 1991, California has hit all-time highs of 25 players twice (most recently in 2009). This year’s total of 22 isn’t a record but comes close. Texas checks in with 12 Super Bowl alums while Florida has 10. Last year, Florida had the most with 16.

Both Colony High of Ontario and Troy High of Fullerton are guaranteed that one of its former players will be part of a Super Bowl championship team because there is one former Titan and one former Warrior on either the Seattle Seahawks or Denver Broncos rosters.

Colony’s duo are linebacker Bobby Wagner of the Seahawks and defensive back Omar Bolden of the Broncos. Wagner was one year ahead of Bolden at Colony, but when the two played together the team won the 2006 CIF Southern Section Central Division title.

At Troy, the school’s 2007 squad featured both running back Derrick Coleman and linebacker/long snapper Aaron Brewer. Coleman now plays at Seattle while Brewer is long-snapping for the Broncos. The team finished 5-4, with one of the losses coming to La Habra, which was led at the time by running back Ronnie Hillman who is now a teammate of Coleman’s with the Seahawks.

California almost had a third high school with two former alums in this year’s Super Bowl, but defensive back Jeron Johnson of the Seahawks went on injured reserve in early December is no longer on the active roster. Johnson played in 2005 and 2006 at Dominguez of Compton where his teammates included receiver/defensive back Richard Sherman. If anyone doesn’t know who Sherman is by now, they just haven’t been paying attention.

The only other high school with two former players in the Super Bowl this year is Maury High of Norfolk, Va. The Commodores had a 9-1 team in 2005 that was led by versatile quarterback Kam Chancellor, who is now starting in the secondary for the Seahawks. Offensive tackle Vinston Painter of the Broncos also is from Maury and was one of the nation’s most recruited linemen during the 2008 season.
