About the Games

The Area Code Baseball Games is an elite baseball event that will be held in Long Beach, Calif. The 2014 tournament will take place from August 4 – August 9 at historic Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

The 2014 tournament will consist of eight teams representing eight regions nationwide. The tryout process begins in June and runs through July. Each team will be built by one of eight Major League Baseball teams. The 2014 teams will include: New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and the Oakland Athletics.

This is a unique event in the sense that the top players from around the country will be on the same field for a week being evaluated at the highest level in baseball. Scouts from all 30 Major League teams and the Major League Scouting Bureau are expected to be in attendance.  Plus, there will be college coaches from many of the top college baseball programs in the nation.

Frequently asked questions:

How much does it cost to tryout and attend the games?

The tryouts and the Area Code Baseball Games are free to attend for the athlete. The only costs incurred by the player are his own travel expenses to the regional workouts and Long Beach.

Are there hotels you can recommend for the tryouts and games?

We will not have any specific hotels or rates for players traveling to a tryout. However, for the New Balance Area Code Baseball Games in Long Beach, we will have a group of hotels with an event rate.  The 2013 hotels and rates for Long Beach can be found here. We will come out with the hotel options for 2014 in January.

Who can participate in the 2014 event?

Players from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 graduation classes are eligible to attend a tryout and play in the New Balance Area Code Baseball Games.

How can I attend a tryout?

Tryouts are by invitation only. Invites typically are sent to the players starting in April and it is not uncommon for a player to receive an invite the day before a tryout. Invitations are sent to players based on recommendations from Major League Scouts from all 30 teams and the Major League Scouting Bureau. However, if a player is recommended to tryout it is does not guarantee that he will be extended an invite. The scouts running that team in that area make that decision. If you would like to be referred to a scout, you can fill out a player profile form here and it will be forwarded to the regional scout for consideration. Team tryouts will be announced starting in January. Please note that we cannot give out names or contact information for the scouts running the teams. If you have any questions please forward them to our staff and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can email Kirsten Leetch at kirsten@studentsports.com or Andrew Drennen at andrew@studentsports.com.

Players, after you submit an Area Code Player Submission Form it will be forwarded off to the scout running the team in your region. Invites to the workouts typically are sent in late April and May. However, some teams have been known to invite players the day before the workout. Each tryout varies in size and is determined by those running the team in that region. You may not attend a tryout that is out of your area. We ask that you return all paperwork sent to you for the workout. If the waiver is not filled out completely, you will not be allowed to participate in a workout.

When will I be notified if I made a team?

The teams will typically notify players within a week of the team’s final tryout if they are selected. If a player is not selected for a team it is not uncommon for another team to invite the player to Long Beach, if room on the roster allows. Team’s rosters vary in size from 22-28 players. Those players selected will be sent forms that need to be filled out. We ask that you do so in a timely manner for purposes of the game program. Additionally, you need to have a waiver signed by yourself and a parent/guardian in order to participate. With out the waiver, you will not be able to compete until one is filled out.

Is the only way to get on a team to play in one of the teams try outs or do you have to get seen by someone?
