Last spring nearly 17,000 of the nation’s top prospects were tested and rated. 2013, the 10th year of the Nike Combines, will once again showcase talent from all corners of the country with a 13-stop tour.

Nike Football SPARQ Combines are free of charge and open to Class of 2014 graduates and top underclassmen high school football players looking to showcase their ability. Alumni of the combines include NFL stars Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), Andre Johnson (Houston Texans), Clay Matthews (Green Bay Packers) and Haloti Ngata (Baltimore Ravens) as well as thousands who have gone on to play Division I college football.

Nike Football SPARQ Combines are one way to qualify for the third annual “The Opening” presented by Nike Football, to be held in early July at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. This competition includes the fourth-annual SPARQ Rating National Championship, which has been televised by ESPNU and will crown the nation’s best high school football athlete.

Attending one of the Nike SPARQ Combines gives each athlete the opportunity to get professionally SPARQ tested. SPARQ stands for speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness. The rating comes from a series of sport-specific tests and gives athletes a chance to see their strengths and weaknesses. Athletes have a chance to measure themselves against other elite players in their class.

There is an opportunity for great recruiting exposure and coverage. There will be stories, photos and videos posted on StudentSports.com recapping the top performers.

Registered athletes participating in the 2013 Nike Football SPARQ Combines will:

•Qualify for a chance to compete in the SPARQ Rating National Championship as part of “The Opening”, to be held in July at the Nike World Headquarters.

•Receive a Nike Combine compression shirt. (Athletes still must bring appropriate workout gear: shorts, sweats, football cleats and training shoes.)

•Be measured by height and weight, and photographed.

•Receive a proper, supervised dynamic warm-up.

•Be tested in: the 40-yard dash (twice, fastest time kept), vertical jump (highest jump kept), the 20-yard shuttle (twice, fastest time kept) and the kneeling power ball throw (twice, farthest throw kept). If players are not satisfied with their results, they may scratch them so they are not reported.

•Receive a SPARQ rating based on a calculation of their testing scores.

•Be eligible for consideration for the next step in Nike’s off-season plan, attending a Nike Football Training Camp, a top-tier national football camp tour. (Selection is based on overall performance and participation is free.)

•Get a chance to compete and be evaluated in a professional environment against others on your team, in your league, in your state and around the nation with the standardized SPARQ testing results and rating.

FAQs:

Q: Who can attend a Nike Football SPARQ Combine? Can seniors (Class of 2013) attend a Nike Football SPARQ Combine?
A: The Nike Football SPARQ Combines are for athletes in the graduating classes of 2014, 2015, and 2016 who are probable varsity athletes for the 2013 fall season. Seniors and 8th graders are not allowed at a Nike Football SPARQ Combine. Players at a post-graduate program also will not be able to attend.

Q: What’s the cost of a Nike Football SPARQ Combine?
A: All Nike Football SPARQ Combines are FREE.

Q: Can a bad performance at a Nike Football SPARQ Combine hurt my stock?
A: No, because of the “scratch rule.” Student Sports and Nike Football care about the athletes first. If an athlete does not like a particular mark, the time or mark may be scratched from the results. Even so, college coaches put more emphasis on how players perform in pads. A disappointing time in the 40 will not lead to colleges dropping a player. At past Nike Football events, running backs and wide receivers have run 4.8′s and linebackers run 5.2′s and still sign with major D-I programs. Current New Orleans Saints standout linebacker Jonathan Vilma clocked a 5.0 40-yard dash at a Nike Football Camp when he was in high school, and obviously the seventh-year All-Pro and Super Bowl champ has not let that slow him down. Use your times, marks and SPARQ Rating to honestly evaluate yourself as a player and see where you can work to improve your athleticism through Nike SPARQ Training.

Q: I forgot my password. How can I get that information?
A: You will have to use the Forgot Password link and enter your email address. An email containing instructions on how you can recover your password will be sent to that email address. If further assistance is required, you’ll need to contact Nike Customer Service at 1.800.344.6453 (7am-4pm PST, M-F) to get assistance with your account. Student Sports will not be able to assist with any login or password information.

Q: I used the Forgot Password link but it says my email is not valid. What should I do?
A: This means that there is not a Nike account associated with that email. Please try again.

Q: Why does the Nike Football SPARQ Combine that I’m trying to register for say “Notify Me” instead of “Register”?
A: Registration for the Nike Football SPARQ Combines will become available approximately six weeks prior to the event date. All you need to do is leave your email address and you’ll receive an email when registration for your event becomes available.

Q: Why does the registration page take me back to the same page over and over again when I try to register for an event?
A: Most of the time this is caused by some sort of security feature like a firewall that prevents the page from loading. Some schools and workplaces often install these security measures. Please try from home or a less secure location and you should have no problems completing the registration.

Q: Why is Nike Football SPARQ Combine that I am trying to register for unavailable or grayed out from the registration page?
A: The registration for the Nike Football SPARQ Combine that you are trying to register for is closed at this time. We would love to stay and test everyone, however due to time constraints and limited supplies, we have to close registration. If you would like, you can show up between 12-1pm the day of the event and register onsite as a walkup. Time permitting walkup athletes will be taken after all registered athletes have checked in. However there is not a guarantee that you will get in to be tested. DO NOT GET THERE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING!  UNREGISTERED ATHLETES WILL NOT BE HELPED UNTIL THE REGISTERED ATHLETES GET THROUGH CHECK-IN.

Q: I registered for a Nike Football SPARQ Combine; will I now get a confirmation email?
A: Yes. You will get an email confirming your registration and another event reminder email the Monday before the event. If you have not received your confirmation within a day of signing up, please check your spam/junk folders.

Q: My school is not listed on the registration page so it will not let me complete registration. What should I do?
A: If you do not see your school of the list of high schools after selecting the state, simply scroll to the bottom of the list and select “Other”. This will bring up a blank field for you to type in your high school. Please be sure to list the full name of your high school.

Q: I registered for a Nike Football SPARQ Combine and could not print my Event Pass and waiver. What should I do?
A: All you have to do is login to your account from the registration homepage. The login icon is located in the upper right hand corner. Once logged in click the register icon until you come to the calendar page. There will be a “Printer” icon to the right of the Nike Football SPARQ Combine that you’re register to attend. Click on the “Printer” icon to reprint your Event Pass and waiver. If you are unable to print your Event Pass for any reason we can still check you in by name when you get to the front of the line. Login Now!  **Please Note: Athletes registering for any Nike Football SPARQ Combine after March 9th, 2013 will not be issued an Event Pass. Only the waiver is required for these Combines.

Q: Why does my Event Pass say that I’m on the waiting list? Will I still get tested?
A: Supplies for the Nike Football SPARQ Combines are limited so if your EVENT PASS says you’re on the waiting list, you’re NOT guaranteed a testing shirt BUT will still be able to test and get a certified SPARQ Rating. DO NOT GET THERE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AS THOSE ATHLETES ON THE WAITING WILL NOT BE HELPED UNTIL MOST OF THE REGISTERED ATHLETES GET THROUGH CHECK-IN.

Q: Why are there different check-in times for certain athletes? Will I be missing something by coming later in the day?
A: You will not miss anything with a later check-in time. Every athlete has the same experience regardless of the check-in time.  Please stick to your scheduled check-in time.

Q: I am a coach or parent that is bringing several athletes that have different check-in times. How can I get them all checked-in and tested together
A: In order to keep the check-in lines down we ask that athletes show up and check-in at the designated times. We understand that sometimes athletes traveling together sometimes end up with different check-in times. Simply show up at the time the majority of the group has posted on their Event Pass and they can all test together.

Q: Can I go to a Nike Football SPARQ Combine to watch?
A: Depends on the venue. At an outdoor combine all parents and spectators will be allowed to watch the event from the stands only, not from the track or sideline. At indoor facilities space is very limited so viewing room will depend on the venue. We must keep the testing area clear and safe for all participants however we will do our best to provide as much viewing room as possible.

Q: Online registration is closed but will I be able to register onsite at the combine as a walkup?
A: There are no guarantees that players will be able to walk up and register at the combine. Keep checking in on the online registration prior to the event as some spots may open up if athletes choose to opt out. DO NOT GET THERE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AS UNREGISTERED ATHLETES WILL NOT BE HELPED UNTIL ALL REGISTERED ATHLETES GET THROUGH CHECK IN AND THEN IT DEPENDS ON WHETHER TIME PERMITS.

Q: I will not be able to attend the event I registered for. Can I give my Event Pass to my teammate or relative?
A: No. The Event Pass is non transferable and is tied to your personal information for that event. Your teammate or relative must register using a different email address. Using another person’s Event Pass will link your testing results to their name and profile. If you are unable to attend the Nike SPARQ Combine that you registered for, please use the un-register feature to release your spot to another athlete.

Q: How do I un-register so another athlete can take my spot?
A: If you are unable to attend the Nike Football SPARQ Combine you registered for, go to the registration website and login to your account. The login icon is located in the upper right hand corner of the homepage. Once logged in, click the “Register For A Combine” icon until you come to the calendar page. Click the un-register icon located to the right of the Combine that you’re registered for and this will release your spot to another athlete. Login Now!

Q: How can I change my registration information?
A: To make a change or correction to your registration information, please email Bob Masajo at bob@studentsports.com.

Q: What are the testing protocols? Where can I get info on the Kneeling Power Ball Toss and other tests?
A: Click HERE now to download a PDF of the testing protocols.

Q: How heavy is the Powerball?
A: The weight of the Powerball is 3KG or 6.6 pounds.

Q: How long does testing at Nike Football SPARQ Combine take?
A: Nike Football SPARQ Combines are on a first come, first serve basis policy so it depends on when you get there and get in line for registration. Once through the registration line it should take no more than an hour or so to complete testing. Every athlete has the same experience regardless of check-in times.

Q: Will there be football-specific drills or 1 on 1’s at the Nike Football SPARQ Combines?
A: No. A Nike Football SPARQ Combine is strictly for testing an athlete’s athletic ability.

Q: How do I get my official SPARQ Rating and results?
A: You will leave the combine with these in hand. You will receive an email after the event with links to view your rating on StudentSports.com.

Q: What do I need to bring to the Nike Football SPARQ Combine?
A: Cleats/running shoes to run in, workout gear your Event Pass and signed waiver. Take a look at the field-type beforehand to determine the best type of cleats/shoes you should run in. NO TRACK SPIKES!!  We will provide a testing shirt and hydration for all athletes. Student Sports and Nike are not responsible for any lost or stolen items, so pack accordingly and note that you don’t need to bring a lot to test.

Q: I am a coach or trainer interested in volunteering, how do I go about this?
A: Email Eugene Jackson at eugene@studentsports.com or Michael Fletcher at fletcher@studentsports.com.

Q: I read the FAQ and still need assistance what can I do?
A: Concerns or questions regarding online registration or the Event Pass, please contact Bob Masajo at bob@studentsports.com. All other inquiries please direct to Tyler McClaughry at tyler@studentsports.com.

Im sorry but I have another question as well…… After the Sparq results are posted, will there be a chance of finding yourself in the ESPN Recruiting Database? And if not, what constitutes finding your name amongst others in the database? How does that process work?

    • kleetch

It takes approximately 6-8 weeks for a profile to get up on the ESPN site but all athletes that go to a combine and are sophs and juniors will go up.

At Nike Brooklyn today over heard several athletes complain that their 40 times were much slower than they had ever run before. I know that happens a lot with kids but I hand timed a few from the sidelines and there was a discrpancy in the ones i timed.sometimes as much as .20 to.30 difference. Can you tell me what is done to insure accuracy of the equipement?

    • kleetch

      May 8, 2013 at 3:57 pm

The average reaction time to see sometime and click a button is 215 milliseconds.
      http://www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime/index.php
      That’s 0.215 seconds!!! There is a huge difference between a 4.4 and a 4.6!

Obviously, timers try to compensate for this error by anticipating the finish, trying to click at the right time… but guess what? no matter what time you get there is a built in .215 +/- error. Yeah, your coach may me good at clicking, but he will never be as accurate as a laser.

Does your position affect your score, or should i say does a 180lb DB score the same as a 180lb WR with the same event scores?

    • kleetch

      April 1, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Your position does not effect your score. Your weight will, so your comparison of the DB and WR at the same weight measuring the same at each testing element will have the same score.

Results should be up today. Just making last minute verifications to ensure the data is accurate.

Update on N.Y./N.J. Nike Football SPARQ Combine

For those who are looking to register for the Nike Football SPARQ Combine (NFSC) scheduled for Sat., April 27 in New York/New Jersey, here’s the latest update…

We are still working on finalizing the location which will be announced very soon. Normally, registration opens six weeks in advance but because details are still being locked down on securing the venue, we haven’t officially started registration even though we’re about five weeks out.

Registration for the N.Y. combine was inadvertently opened for a brief window of time this week and to those who did get in, you DO have a spot confirmed and we’ll communicate with you once everything is officially set. For those who are looking to register, keep checking back to the StudentSports.com home page as we will announce in the headlines when registration is live.

We apologize for the confusion the situation has caused but please know that those we want to participate in the New York/New Jersey NFSC and register in a timely manner will get to attend!

    Thanks,

    Nike Football SPARQ Combine staff
